With the pandemic encouraging less face-to-face interaction, the usage of cell phones, and other electronic technology has drastically increased, especially among adolescents. In particular, adolescents have been drawn to social media platforms such as Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, or Snapchat.
Digital usage has both positive and negative effects. It can help fulfill young people’s social connectedness needs, allowing young users to access a diverse network of people without the limits of physical space and distance, and create strong, positive relationships that fulfill their needs for social connection. However, increased digital usage can affect their sleep schedules and daily physical activity. Additionally, it is linked to increases in anxiety and/or depression. It could also expose them to cyberbullying.
This panel discussion will give caregivers the information and tools to help encourage and navigate healthy usage with their children.
